Totally agree with Nick ......Post op period is just as important as the "herioc surgery" as potentially if your client does not adhere to post op care all that work is undone and totally pointless to the patient...whats the point in surgery if the appropriate post op care is not followed up?Id be having a serious chat with this surgeon!

It is up to the surgeon to prescribe post op care specific to their patient especially in relation to orthopaedic work when these patients should be treated as individuals to their specific condition.

Both our surgeons have specific post op care protocols that we [nurses] go through with the clients depending on what surgery the patient has received.

After that it goes on to more extensive physio, inclusing hydrotherapy. We advise on excersise levels for the six weeks post op and also suppliments and diet etc. Its about 3 pages long in all and we do tell clients that this would be the ideal but as people are constrained with time and work and family we do tell them to use it as a guide and to do the best they can.

If you like I could send you a copy if you like.

Re: Post -op Orthropaedic instructions

Where I used to work we didn't advice client about physio, would normally refer them for physio if required or do some in house

Routinely we would say confined to garden only (on lead) for first week or so post op. Followed by 5 - 10 mins lead exercise per day up until 6 weeks PO. Normally undertake PO radiographs at this point and then review exercise regime at this point. normally gradually increasing lead exercise over next 4 -6 weeks. Review then and then start to allow the patient small periods of time off lead, gradually increasing this periods back to normally.

Personally I think you do need the input of your ortho surgeon, each has their own ideas on PO care of patients. The main idea is gradual rehabilitation back to normal. Plus care plans should be tailored to the needs of each individual case
