That is very interesting, knew about rotating, not shaking it before use but not the reaction to the rubber or that it technically doesn't need to be stored in the fridge!! Love learning random knowledge like this! Just told one of the vets and another nurse- they didnt know that either!! (ha, ha yes I am a fountain of knowledge....thanks to vetnurse of course!!)

Re: Insulin

Oh i didn't know that Paula! Interesting to know.

Re: Insulin

Thanks Vicky!

Until seeing this thread I wasn't aware of the need to keep insulin upright! Shall mention it to owners from now on, and also the fridge door thing.

I just LOVE this site! I phoned Intervet who said that the bottle must be stored upright because over time the insulin reacts with the rubber bung.... If there is regular contact with the rubber, can be all the time or just for a period of time each day (length of time not known) then it reacts.

Re: Insulin

I had a very successful BVNA cpd evening last week on Endocrinology.

Dr Carmel Mooney, UCD was the speaker.

She informed us that insulin doesnt actually have to be stored in a refridgerator. The reason these guidelines were imposed was because its extremely important that insulin is kept a the same temperature. A fridge, obviously is the only way to do that.

If we were to keep it on a windowsill for example, with the sun coming in and out, temperature would not remain the same. Anywhere in the kitchen/sitting room/bathroom for example would have varying temperatures depending on when there was central heating on or not. So, for these reasons, storing insulin in the fridge was the only way of maintaining a constant temperature.

Re: Insulin

This is also why insulin bottles should be kept on a fridge shelf rather than door, as the rolling around will equate to shaking the bottle (as opposed to the gentle mix before using).

Re: Insulin

From what I remember the insulin settles out and if it settles out on the rubber of the bung it will bond and not resuspend - meaning the concentration of the insulin is affected.
