I prefer to use either a fluid pump or a syringe driver, usually give it over 45mins up to 1hr.

You would have to give it by hand infusion if no pump or syringe driver available (not ideal)

Adverse effects in animals are uncommon and are generally limited to vomiting. CNS toxicity (nystagmus, ataxia, knuckling, head tilt and seizures), hepatotoxicity and haematuria. Excessive salivation in noted in some cats. Prolonged usage or the presence of pre-existing hepatic disease may predispose to CNS toxicity. Use in caution in the 1st trimester of pregnancy as can be teratogenic (birth defects)

The reason it is wrapped is because it is light sensitive. and can become unstable if placed in direct sunlight. I cover all as routine practice

dosage?

How slowly does it need to be given?

why does it need to be stored in dark..does this apply during infusion?

What way would you reccomend to infuse it when there is no infusion pump?

Any side-effects we should be aware of?

Sorry I know this is basic stuff but although we have used metronide tabs for years I am an i/v metronide virgin!

Re: Intravenous Metronidazole

Thanks guys, thats what I kinda figured but just needed to be sure.

Re: Intravenous Metronidazole

I would say day of opening use only.

Re: Intravenous Metronidazole

I think they are meant to be single use only, we tend to keep them for 24 hours maximum and keep them stored in the dark obviously.

Re: Intravenous Metronidazole

I have it open for that day then bin it!
