More than likely if the "crisis" continues, we will be able to import some more from Europe. Someone at one of the manufacturers told me that is an option they have atm.

We hd a letter yesterday to say will have 3 doses of procyon lepto delivered 9th feb. What you get is based on previous years usage but as we are a new practice we had only been open 2 months last jan so not really a fair comparison to this jan. We are inundated with new pups at the moment - anyone else the same??

Latest updates from our clinic are:

It's Procyon we were supplied with in place of Nobivac Lepto. Now we've been told we can't order more. We have to go direct to Intervet who apparently have a list of preferred places and will decide if we can have any or not. I'm not sure what the criteria is, whether it's how big an order, how frequently you use it, if you're a single practice, a group, a charity etc etc. Also the DHPPI is now unavailable for the same reasons, not for lack of production but by Intervet taking control.

We've asked about all the other brands and have been told we can't obtain Canigen exxept direct from manufacturer under same principle as Nobivac.
Eurican is also totally out of stock due to people stockpiling other brands!
Vanguard we can order as DAPPIL - in 25 doses at a time
Duramune 8 (which includes the Corona Virus vaccine (anyone use that one?) we can get but it's more expensive so we'd have to adjust our prices to our low income clients.
Duramune 7 is in short supply but we may be able to get some.

Our supplier says this problem is not going to be resolved short term (they have also been told it will be May before the original Nobivac Lepto vaccine is back in stock) and people will struggle to obtain any Lepto single, or bundled vaccine, plus the others regularly used with it also seem to be affected by the manufacturers taking back control of supply.

Procyon hasn't been recalled - it's because of the demand for other lepto vaccines that Procyon has run out. Surgeries were told not to switch brands as this would create an unusual demand for other vaccines but people have panicked & bought anything else. Vaccine manufacturers only make what the previous supply has been - any rapid increase leads to shortages. This is what's happened here.

Intervet Schering Plough have said it will be back in stock by next week.

Apparently the Procyon isn't coming now either, because they but it from Intervet, so because their suppilers have recalled it, you can't now get either.

At my last practice, we'd quite often give a different vaccine to puppies & ktitens that came from breeders/different practices, without batting an eyelid. Only ever sourced a different brand if someone really fussed about it.

We have allocated 2nd doses for our courses in the back fridge - we counted how many 2nd vaccs were due that had nobivac for 1st dose and made sure each of those had a 2nd vacc put aside of the same brand. We have managed to get hold of some vanguard lepto but we are now running lowish on those too as we seem to have been inundated with boosters last few days. Hoping we do get the procyon as promised.

I was at a meeting run by Intervet Schering Plough who make both Nobivac & Procyon lines of vaccines.

Their line is - do not change vaccines - as this will lead to a shortage of the Procyon range also.

They will supply Procyon Lepto to all their normal Nobivac users to substitute the Nobivac Lepto. This cannot be mixed with a DHPPi vaccine but can be injected on the same day, at different sites. They will supply free dilutent & syringes for this.

New stock should be available by 12th May BUT if testing goes awry again, it may be back to square 1. Because of this National Vaccination Month has been moved til June, but you should be getting letters into your practice about this.

They have protocols in place and these can be viewed on BSAVA website and have been endorsed by BSAVA also.

We've given Nobivac DHPPI & Lepto as a second vac to a new client who's pup was vaccinted elsewhere (think the 1st vac was a different brand) pup is fine & dandy!

I do know though that it's not licenced to mix brands for each vaccine. I.E Nobivac DHPPI & a different brand of lepto like eurican or duramune.

We are currently using Eurican for boosters, Eurican is not licenced to give to pups of 8wks.. but it is from 10wks. So when Nobivac lepto is out, we'll have to vaccinate at 10 + 12wks instead! only problem is I think eurican lepto is slowly running out also!! Hopefully by the time that lepto goes, nobivac lepto will be back lol!

I dont know of any official documentation, but have been told by manufacturers not to do either of the above mentioned scenarios, but to change product all together. this would probably only be for a short time, as nobivac will be supplying procyon lepto FOC to those who have been using their lepto product from the 1st week of Feb. This of course cannot be mixed with the DHP/DHPPI and has to be injected into a seperate site. ie, 2 injections.

I mean both on a course - ie Nobivac DHPPI + Nobivac Lepto on the first vacc, and brand x on the 2nd vacc

and also

any booster etc Nobivac DHPPI + brand x Lepto mixed together for the one injection.

If there is a problem with either of these procedures, is there any document proof that it can cause problems, and if so what to look out for (should we decide/have to do it, we're a charity and try to keep costs down as much as possible in order to pass on the prices to the client).

I wouldnt mix brands if it was a course, if that's what you mean? ie 1st and 2nd vacc.
