Am currently working in a small animal practice where we don't often see critical care patients (i.e accident and emergancy), and if we do get them in our aim is to stabilise them and then transfer them to our on call service as we don't have 24

Re: Help with emergency drugs

[quote user="Caro Laithwaite"]

We already have an aneasthetic emergency box and so have those drugs appropriate and to hand. I know what you mean re things being tidy, it's so frustrating when you are trying to find something in a hurry and everythings in chaos

As for in A&E cases, we got a cupboard full of stuff like bandage, tape, fluids, - all within easy access (providing people keep it tidy! lol)

Re: Help with emergency drugs

Thanks Caro,

This all pretty much came about because we have a "newer" qualified vet and she wanted Mannitol (sp?) as had a suspected head injury case in. I just want to be prepared in case something unexpected comes in. Good point re making sure info there although our vets are good and normally speak to referal vets and pass info on. Also in this case dog was too ill to be taken by owners so we took in the vets car (with me sittring in the back with her to monitor) and so all monitoring sheets and rads went with her.

Re: Help with emergency drugs

Our most used emergency drugs are. Vetagesic, Physeptone, Fluids, Synulox and Metacam. That is at a major a & e. Do not need anything fancy to be honest.

Dressings for any wounds or supports dressings.

Various catheters yellow, blue and pink and a couple of purples (for bunnies) Emla cream for bunny ears.

Some 3 way taps and extension leads especially for emergency cystos on cats to get the animal comfy to OOH and not put extra strain. It may "only" be a 20 min trip but that is a long "only" on a blocked cat. 20 ml syringes and 10ml to drain the fluids off with and also keep a syringe full from the patient to check for inclusions (crystals etc).

Could draw some bloods if you are doing a drip and send them on with the patient. It is optional if run or not but that would depend how the various vets would feel it would save the OOH pulling them and is one step less.If all hell is letting loose one less job is a godsend.

Check with ooh that fax info sent on has arrived so much never does, if need be send the info by hand with the owners or whoever takes the animal over to ooh.

Diazemuls for fitters and rectal diazemuls can send a tube or 2 with whoever takes the animal to the OOH to use if it fits on the way.

Will add anything else l can think off as l am sure other will. Simple is the best way don't get all fancy and complex.
