I am based in Bristol so I think that Halifax would be a little to far to commute! I might possibly consider a 1st year training post with accomodation? A little too much to ask probably. I will keep my eyes on the job forum anyway.

Unfortunately I don't know of any training practices nearby as I am completely the wrong end of the UK (Edinburgh) but I wish you good luck and am sure that it won't be long before you are snapped up! You might be able to get some nursing (auxillary unfortunately) or reception-work through Vets Now Bristol in the meantime. Could you maybe send a CV round all the local practices offering your services as a locum ANA but detailing how experienced you are and how you are locumming whilst seeking that elusive training post. I know that probably sounds demeaning (and I would be squirming at the thought of having to do that as you are - in my opinion and which will hack some people off - a vet nurse) but it would a) avoid getting people (who might employ you)'s backs up, and b) get you into practices that are TPs through a back door route. Once they realise what a fab asset you are (if they don't realise it already) they will be fighting to hold onto you. What is one of the big off-putters of taking on a trainee? Having to spend loads of time showing them what to do. You are god's gift to a TP practice surely!!!!

Re: Thinking about training after 22 years!

Thanks for the big pat on the back.
After being made redundant earlier this year after 11 years as the senior nurse in a small practice (that has just been bought by a large group) I am now seriously considering qualifying. I have worked as an un qualified nurse for the past 22 years and qualifying was not an issue as I had a full nursing career and even successfully trained the trainee's. Obviously these days most practices only employ Qualified, which I have no issue with and agree, but it has left me somewhat in limbo. The elusive trainee position is difficult to find as most youngsters would agree, let alone finding one that is after a mature 39 year old!

Does anyone know anything about the full time VN course that the CAW college is running. I first saw it advertised here but am unable to find out anyting on the net. I have Emailed the college with no success. Really I am after any hints and advice etc that any one can give me please

[/quote]

Wow - I would have thought any practice thinking about training a nurse would snap you up over a newbie any day of the week! 11yrs experience and probably know quite a bit of the theory too - surely that would make you a very attractive proposition to a practice! I am assuming you have approached all the local practices?

Re: Thinking about training after 22 years!

I would imagine the CAW course to be pretty good as a sort of alternative to finding a full time SVN position. The only downside may be finding a foster practice for you to gain your practical experience as the degree students tend to have this problem too. However if you did want to apply for SVN jobs, your experience in practice would be a huge advantage so may find yourself more successful than someone starting out.

Where are you based? There have been a few SVN jobs advertised recently, and although there is nothing definite on the way the training will pan out over the next year, it would be useful for you to get your foot in the door as it were.

Best of luck!
