Some volunteers from the local animal rescue group had a meeting with the vet recently on them microchipping animals at the rescue centre or in peoples homes.
I agree, I've been doing nurse consults and often get owners who cannot hold their pets safely. I end up taking them to the vet and restraining the pet myself.

I stopped chipping as I found the owners just couldn't restrain and I didn't want to cause any problems.

Re: Do people have to take a course to microchip or is it optional?

Hi, Di

How are you?

I was just a little concerned that a few of the people from the rescue group haven't had that much experience handling, inserting chip etc into cats. I know that it comes with time but i also know that sometimes getting someone to hold a cat who doesn't want to be held whilst been chipped can be a struggle in the veterinary environment. I don't think i would be happy to go into peoples homes on my own and expect owners to hold. 9/10 things would go fine but there is always that 1 time when the cat freaks out.

I am sarah by the way, ex walpoles

I did a days training course as I did chipping as part of the pet sitting business.

CAW do do microchipping day couses too.

The only training I recieved was from a VN, dont know about the legal stuff but suely if they have had some sort of training and have microchipped with someone watching etc able to step in if any poblems and that they feel confident, then they should be able to.

Where do they get the chips from? Suppose its down to the cmpay to make sure they are competent in microchiping as they will be supplying the chips!

Re: Do people have to take a course to microchip or is it optional?

the local kennels at ours do their own, although I recsued my old staffie who was just a dude (would let you do anything) and they were having an fete and they wouldnt do him coz he was a staffy!
