How does everyone else get on with it?

Does Zylkene have an effect on the Thyroid gland? I tested my dog the other day and his result was 12 (the range for borderline low is 10-20). I decided to test it as ever since he was 'drugged' by the Zylkene, he has become lethargic etc and has all the signs of a Hypothyroid dog.

[/quote]Zylkene shouldn't effect the thyroid gland at all - it is simply a small protein.

Did you also test the TSH level as well as the T4 as both together are needed to establish hypothyroidism. Lots of other things can lower the T4.

Re: Zylkene - I now have a drugged dog!!

I wouldn't of thought so, going by the info on the product. Zylkene can be used in conjuction to help reduce stress levels, much in the same way as DAP can, as there are no contraindications.;as it is a milk protien that the dogs/cats have lost the ability to produce since being weaned. I have used it on numerous occasions and have found it to be very useful. I can only prseume the sedative like qualties that some dogs are experiencing are just that they are too chilled out?! (obviously not an expert on this, but it is only milk protien!)

The reason for using zylkene over products such as Xanax are;

It is licenced under the veterinary casscade.

It is useful as it helps with retaing memories when used in conjustion with cognative rehablitation, obviously if their is a highly level of anxiousness in an unpredicable situation especially with noise phobias retaining memories is not always ideal so Xanax which prevents memories being laid down it then ideal. (however Xanax has to be used off licenced but is often the most appropriate and effective 'drug' of choice)

The most successful use of Zylkene I have is for a self mutilating cat. Physically healthy and no obvious caused for his excessive grooming other than 'feline stress' Feliway calmed him down slighlty but once on zylkene all problems have ceased. We tried weaning him off and he started overgrooming again. So he is on them perminatly with no side effects apart from purring.

I know they also use Zylkene in treating feline stress in captive lions.

I am Claire Pointing one of the technical veterinary surgeons at Intervet Schering/Plough, I am responsible for Zylkène.

Just to clarify - Zykène contains alpha-casozepine - which is part of the milk protein casein. It is produced by a process that only occurs in newborns but has the same effect in adults. It is lactose free and hypoallergenic.

Zylkène has been proven not to have any sedative properties so it is surprising to hear of this effect in your dog. Zylkène has calming, stress-relieving properties but it does not sedate or block memory which is why it is a very useful product in managing firework stress for many dogs and cats.

For most animals the recommended daily amount is 15mg/kg. However, we know from clinical trials that there are a few animals where a lower amount – 7mg/kg – is effective at managing stress, although these dogs do not show a sedation-type response at the 15mg/kg amount. I would suggest trying the lower amount this year for your dog, and please do let us know how you get on.

If you read some of the bumph from ISP, the animal needs to be on Zylkene for a minimum of 1 month for it to make any difference. Alrthough when I used it on my dog, I had her on it for 3 months with no difference and called the rep who said I obviously hadn't tried it for long enough!!!

I am not a fan of Zylkene - have used it on my own dog & various others for fireworks & general anxiety and got nothing back from it!! It's basically milk, in powder form!! (minus a protein or something before someone tells me I'm wrong)

Start using DAP or scullcap & valerian - you'll get much better results!!

milk minus the sugars and still has the protein was the way i understood it. I've had great results with my ocicat.

Start using DAP or scullcap & valerian - you'll get much better results!!

Re: Zylkene - I now have a drugged dog!!

also had a few reports at work of sleepy animals after dosing with Zylkene

Re: Zylkene - I now have a drugged dog!!

Hi,

I have had that side-effect a few times with my collie X. It occurs in him when I double the recommended dose (or more). He seems slightly 'drunk' under these circumstances. I don't take him off the medication afterwards and am happy to see this 'side effect' as I know that he is going to be pretty calm for a while. There doesn't appear to be any longterm effect of the increased dose.

Re: Zylkene - I now have a drugged dog!!

I was going to leave off them for a few days. i will see how he is tomorrow - poor thing has one problem after another...hes only 18m old and also has bilateral HD

Re: Zylkene - I now have a drugged dog!!

Dont suppose you have the insert to check what it says re side effects?
You could try calling your rep to see if they have any similar reactions or if they recommend lowering the dose?

Re: Zylkene - I now have a drugged dog!!

The correct dose for him is 1x 225mg SID.
