Taken from the NEW BSAVA Manual of Advanced Vet Nursing:

RER (resting energy requirement) = 70 x (BW x 0.75) (30kg plus)

                                                                  (30 x BW) + 70 (2 - 30kg)

Traditionally the RER was then multiplied by an illness factor between 1.0 and 2.0 dependant of the type of illness being treated to account for increases in metabolism associated with different conditions. Recently, there has been less emphasis on these subjective illness factors and current recommendations are to use more conservative energy estimates to avoid overfeeding. overfeeding can result in metabolic and gastrointestinal complications, hepatic dysfunction, increased carbon dioxide and weakened respiratory muscles.

If are planning of using this calculation for enteral feeding remember to reduce the first days feed by 50% and no food should be put down the tube for the 1st 24hrs.
