Guy guys, thanks for the info so far. If anybody else can shed any light on the fluid requirements for neonates and any other exotics pelase post!

rabbits are 100ml/kg/24, i can remember reading somewere a few years ago that neonates had a different fluid rate but for the life of me i couldnt find it anywere when i needed it for a really ill puppy, so the vet said to use the standard rate.

daisy is my St Bernards name LOL

Thanks Vicky. yeah - that sounds right to me too. I had a vague recollection of 4mls/kg/hr which is roughly the same as 100mls/kg/24hrs so I think that's right. I seem to think neonates are treated in roughly the same way fluids wise but if anybody knows for sure what the recommended rates are for neonates please speak up!

Fluid calculations for exotics? Does anyone know what the mls/kg for maintenance is for each popular species?

Also,

neonates (dogs/cats)? I vaguely remember 4mls/kg but cannot remember the last time I dripped a neonate!

this was taken from Dechra Fluid therapy online CPD:

Try to estimate the volumes of losses from vomiting, diarrhoea and diuresis. Drainage from wounds or effusion into body cavities may also be significant.

Vomit and diarrhoea are 4mls/kg for each time

ie if a 10kg dog has vomited 5 times in a day it would be:

4 x 10 = 40 x 5 = 200mls

My notes say 1-4ml/kg/vomit but were told to average at 2

% dehydrated x 10 x kg bodyweight = mls

% dehydrated x kg bodyweight = mls
100

body weight x % x 10 = fluid deficit

BW x maint per 24hrs = maint. requirements

add these two figures together to get the amount of fluid that needs to be given over 24hrs to replace the fluid loss

Don't forget to include insensible losses such as vomit and diarrhoea.
