Has any one had a case, what did you treat with/ nursing care, and what was the outcome.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Tetanus in puppies

Well done to those who nursed their dogs throught it, I've seen a few cases and they rarely survive without round-the-clock full-on nursing care and often require ventilators.

I have heard views that Tetanus anti-toxin is useless if used after clinical signs have developed, but you might be willing to try anything at that point?

In addition to other drugs mentioned, we used IV penicillin ie Crystapen.

Good luck x

Re: Tetanus in puppies

[/quote]I used tetanus anti toxin on mine. He had 3 doses of it, but it was over a week after he first got sick that he got the first shot.

Re: Tetanus in puppies

iv nursed about 4 cases now! I think (if i remember correctly) that 3 of them made rec and went home, very rewarding.

nursing is the main thing in theses cases, if he cant get up make sure on soft bedding to prevent ulcers, turned reg and if hairy poss clip to prevent urine scalding or a urine cath?

hope he gets well.

Poor thing looks like a dead stiff dog! The owners have no money but want us to try. Legs still gone, but are relaxed thanks to the muscle relaxant, he gets around a little by backward bum shuffle.

He can eat by himself if spoon fed, water is brought to hime all the time and gets plently of stimulation by coming home every night with me, although if I hear 'ahh its an andrex puppy' one more time I may have to start putting him in a disguise!

Re: Tetanus in puppies

I've seen two cases of tetanus and both pulled through eventually.
It's so nice to see when they start to get better and that startled expression goes from their face.

Re: Tetanus in puppies

cant remember what meds we used but there was loads of intensive nursing for physio and syringe feeding, it was a young but think adult dog we had,

Was a long process and she got worse before she got better, but she got out, still slightly stiff but wagging her tail and moving on her own
