They are all scratchy from the drag of the slide. Could be the slide quality (rough edges) but I'm sure we have always used these ones. Any suggestions on a good

Re: Microcsope Slides

If you have a sharpning stone for dental equipment I just wipe my slide over that quickly then clean well and usually it works really well as it takes away the jagged edges.

Re: Microcsope Slides

i agree with helen, the one with the frosted bit to write on are fab, I got a sample pack from idexx and couldnt believe the difference. Also ensure you clean the spreader well each time with alcohol/spirit - to prevent any residue from previous smear causing probs. You can also wipe slide prior to use with alcohol but just make sure you rinse it clean with distilled water.

We use the more expensive slides with the nice frosting on the ends as they seem much better quality than cheap/plain slides - also boss insists on them! We bulk buy them seperately not from NVS - although for the life of me I cant remember where from - sorry!

Re: Microcsope Slides

Dunlops recently changed their slides to the Henry Schein make and I agree, we're not getting good quality smears either. However, the way I've tried to get round this - make sure your spreader slide is much narrower than the smear slide, cut a large corner off (bigger than you normally would) and it should sit nicer in the slide and hopefully give a better smear!

We're now using slides from Safavet and they seem to be much nicer, although still using the narrower spreader slide.
