Had a guinea pig bought in by a client a couple of days ago after she found it in her cats mouth! little pig isn't hers so we're guessing she escaped from somewhere and was then "picked up" by the kitty. She's not fully grown so we're guessing

Re: poorly guinea pig

Aww yay great news

Re: poorly guinea pig

Thats wonderful news Hannah, well done

Re: poorly guinea pig

Hi thanks for all the replies,

Basically carried on with the critical care and added vit c. Also continued with ab tx to cover wound and incase middle ear infection was causing head tilt (as mentioned e caniculi isn't common but can affect guineas). Started eating a little food by himself (whoops not a little lady after all!!) at the start of last week and gradually improved until was eating fine by friday. Head tilt improved but still apparent and we're hoping will gradually improve.

Good news is we've re-homed him with a lovely lady who I know will continue with his care and looks like the lucky little pig his going to get his happy ending!

Re: poorly guinea pig

E.Caniculi is not common in Guinea Pig but unknown, i would treat as though it has it and hope for the best. Try also suplementing the supreme recovery with abidec (childrens vitamin drops) to ensure vit c. Dandelions are a good thing to offer have these have been shown to actually stimulate apetite in some small mammals.

Re: poorly guinea pig

Vet told me to give 100mg daily. I just tend to put that into the first feed for the day, then rest of the feeds are just plain recovery. It doesn't have to be in the food every time you feed the pig, as long as they are getting 100mg daily.

How is the piglet doing?

My Poppy has two patches of alopecia. I thought it may have been cystic ovaries but vet said wasn't that sort of hair loss, and couldn't palpate the ovaries. Vet has looked under microscope for mites and can't see any. But just in case we've treated with Xeno, Surolan (in case of fungal infection) bid and vit c supplementation. They've never had a problem with not getting enough vit c, have always got enough with what i've fed them. However i'm wondering if this was the problem because Daisy has started to look a bit scurfy. I had been giving them different pellets (normally have excel guinea), we had some samples of different stuff send to work so have been using that. Wondering if the vit c content in that isn't high enough. Have put them back onto excel and will see what happens with Daisy. One of the treatments we've used on Poppy is working because the skin is healthy again and the fur is starting to grow back

Re: poorly guinea pig

Yes definately need to add vitamin c into mixture, i cant remember the exact amount im afraid tho!! I vaguely remember before giving something like 1ml three times a day, but dont know how much of the tablet we used and what is was diluted with im afraid!!!
I'm not a G pig expert, wondered if slight head tilt could actually be associated with the neck wound? A cats teeth cause puncture wounds which may appear insignificant but are deep, also hooching with bacteria not to mention the trauma associated with shaking/pawing. I guess it would be the equivalent of me being attacked by a T-Rex, I would quite possible get a head tilt after a few days!!

we used to see this a lot in wildlife that had been caught by a cat.

Re: poorly guinea pig

I'm not a G pig expert, wondered if slight head tilt could actually be associated with the neck wound? A cats teeth cause puncture wounds which may appear insignificant but are deep, also hooching with bacteria not to mention the trauma associated with shaking/pawing. I guess it would be the equivalent of me being attacked by a T-Rex, I would quite possible get a head tilt after a few days!!

Re: poorly guinea pig

Also, i've not heard of E.Caniculi in guineas either, but that's not to say it doesn't happen!

Re: poorly guinea pig

Don't forget that recovery doesn't have the added vit c that guineas need, so get some vit c tablets, crush and mix in with the recovery. Mine will never say no to carrot and kale so give them a go with the little piglet. Hope she recovers ok x

Re: poorly guinea pig

I have had a lot of guinea pigs and never heard of them getting E.Caniculi or panacur being used on them, I may be wrong though.
