There has been alot of discussion about the rates of pay that RIG offer its locums. I have recently been told that your organisation charge the practices £15/hour for locum nurses and that, therefore, it is to your interest to set the hourly wage

Re: Fees
I agree with you 100% POHM but was just pointing a few things out - not specifically relating to Rig

I would also like to add that when I got my last job the practice ended up paying a huge amount as it was a permanent placement even tho I had never worked for Rig before and knew about the job already from another nurse working there. the fact that Rig contacted me about the job afterwards and I was registered with them meant the practice had to pay. I cant remember how much it was now (I know it was either 1500 or 2000 because the practice took pains to tell me how much I had cost them and I also know I didnt benefit from that at all because then the salary the practice were prepared to pay me dropped as well )
That's really interesting. What that suggests to me is that nurses should not allow themselves to be on RIGs books just incase they want a locum job and should not let RIG have their contact details in case they also inadvertantly fall in the same trap. However I cannot believe that RIG would intentionally do such a thing as I am sure that they are a reputable company and would realise that this is a bit unfair. I am sure that now that they have had a change over of staff this sort of thing would nolonger happen as they must realise that this is unfair. The vet world is such a small place that nurses regularly find out about jobs from friends in the business so it seems unreasonable for a recruiter to be able to do this. Do we all need to start getting our friends to put everything in writing incase there is any dispute as to where an applicant found out about the job. Perhaps RIG would like to comment and put our minds at rest?

Re: Fees

I agree with you 100% POHM but was just pointing a few things out - not specifically relating to Rig

if you work for an agency you have the opportunity for them to do the paperwork for you and your wage is PAYE if that is what you want. If you work for an agency they will want their cut - they dont do the spade work for nothing so it might mean you earn less , but it might also mean that you dont have to spend so long looking around for work as a decent agency can usually keep the work coming in for you.
Hi, in the case of RIG though the locum nurses have to pay an additional sum of money out of their wages each week to an umbrella company. It is this company that sorts out wages, expenses, etc so as far as I can see RIG are taking as much as a £6/hour cut just for finding you the job/liaising with the practice - and I cannot see how they can justify charging so much more than a more traditional agency. I remember using an agency not that long ago to find a locum nurse when I was in management and I seem to remember them charging £15/day for placing a nurse - on top of that the nurse charged £15/hr (which I would not normally have paid but I was desperate and it was short notice). Had I paid the nurse £12/hour though it would have been cheaper £96/8 hrs + £15 = £111 than paying £15/hr to an agency and having them pay the nurse - £15 x 8 = £120). As far as I can see it is better for nurses and for practices to use a traditional company that charges by the day and not by the hour and it works out considerably better for the nurse to use an agency that charges by the day.

Re: Fees

I suppose the only realistic way to look at this is to compare the percentage taken in agency fees from a locum nurses wage and the percentage taken from a locum vets wage for similar hours.

Re: Fees

if you work for an agency you have the opportunity for them to do the paperwork for you and your wage is PAYE if that is what you want.
TBH the paperwork isnt really that difficult and if you keep decent records - which you should be doing anyway it isnt a problem.

There are lots of pros and cons with this
