The idea of a no obligation weeks trial is a great one too. Our newest noob nurse did that for us, it was her suggestion! We were impressed so offered the trial. It's her first paid day with us today.

Gut feelings are a good indication too. I spent 6 months unhappy in a practice coz I didn't listen to my gut feeling. 6 months is a loooong time to spend anywhere miserable. I was worried about how it'd look on my CV but subsequent employers haven't made an issue about it. The ones who asked, I was truthful with. You win some, you lose some.

Re: what do u look for in a new job?

I would always suggest going and spending half a day or a day in a prctice before starting work, you get a proper feel for the place and what your work colleuegs are really like (lol). I did this in my current job and it gave me a proper insite to how the practice worked and what work was involved etc... I've been in mycurrent job for 5 years now. As Paula mentioned vibes are good too!

Re: what do u look for in a new job?

[quote user="mrs mac"]

I kinda go on gut instinct as daft as that sounds, some places you go to you just get good vibes and if the salary conditions are right its all thumbs up.

Other places also offer good packages but if the vibe doesnt feel right then thats not good.

Definitely see if you could work there for 1/2 a day or so, see how other staff get on and whether you like their working practice. Though this will only give you a rough idea how the practice is (people will either be on best behaviour to impress you, or not speak to you much if they aren't particularly chatty to new people!), you will get some idea how things are there.

Good luck!

Re: what do u look for in a new job?

Friendly colleagues - it makes all the difference!

Re: what do u look for in a new job?

I have only had one job that I didn't like (knew after the first day that I'd made a mistake) so on my next interview I asked if I could spend a few hours getting a feel for the place before either side made a decision.

This worked out really well and now we ask any new employees to do the same. I know you will not know for sure until you start a new job but I feel that it does give you a little insight to how it is run and what the people are like.

If this isn't an option then go with gut feeling as that usually works.
