see it as their loss and that something better will come along. I know how hard it can be but to hang on in there.

I once got asked - if a magazine was writing an article about you what would it be titled and what would it say - -that was bloomin hard. Can't remember what i said but i got the job so it can't have been too bad.

Just thought I'd update you all.. I found out yesterday that I haven't got the job :( I am gutted - back to square one..

I don't think I could have done any better really, she said it was the sheer number of candidates, I don't know.

I heard or read once that when you go for an interview, if you are very nervous, you should imagine the interviewees naked lolol

One vet I was interviewed by asked how big my home town was!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another vet interviewed a friend of mine and asked if she liked watching E.R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone

Thank you for all your good luck messages etc..

So, I had my interview - went really well - Or I at least hope so! I think I answered everything as well as I could - giving examples of where my current skills matched what they were looking for. I tried to show how interested I am without being too OTT lol..

The questions weren't too difficult, I wasn't asked any scary questions like above! haha.. I think my research definitely helped, thinking about why I definitely wanted to become a vet nurse - not just to work with animals!

I should hear something next week - fingers crossed!!

I got asked about my thoughts on welfare issues such as tail docking, dew claw removal and neutering pregnant cats. Wise to have an answer ready for questions like that! Try to stay calm and not get your knickers in twist, like I did by going off on one!!

a little off topic, but on the subject of what would you do if you didn't agree with a vets clinical decision, how will this impact when vn's are regulated? would we (hopefully i will be vn by then) be able to refuse to follow a vets instruction if we felt it wasn't in the best interests on the animal? and what would we do about it?

i think it is a daft question to ask a potential trainee at interview, but perhaps an important question to ask rvn's.....

Hello Kelly,

I've been interviewing recently and had to ask loads of questions.

One of the usual ones being, what made you apply for the job? Think carefully about your answer, nearly everyone answers "because I want to work with animals". Whilst this isn't a wrong answer and is probably the truth, it can be a little disheartening to hear the same thing over and over. One of the candidates who impressed me the most replied "because I want to make a difference to pets' lives and to educate people on how to look after their animals". That was pretty much word perfect to what I wanted to hear!

Asking what you would do if you didn't agree with a vets clinical decision is perhaps a little odd. In the beginning, you wouldn't have enough experience to be able to make that judgement for yourself. If you're worried (about anything), your head nurse should be your first port of call.

I did have one trainee bawl me out as she didn't agree with a vets decision to refer a lame puppy to a specialist. We had x-rayed him and there was nothing obvious on the x-ray. So to be on the safe side, we sent the xrays to an orthopaedic specialist.

The trainee was upset that the client was having to spend more money getting a second opinion when we had said that there was nothing wrong. Not true, we had said there wasn't anything obviously wrong, i.e no fractures of long bones. I had to calmly point out to her that just beacuse we couldn't see anything, it didn't mean there wasn't anything there. Had she ever heard of Perth's disease? She hadn't so it led to a discussion about it. She (in the end) agreed that she didn't have enough knowledge to be able to make a judgement call.

Those questions are quite difficult - especially the Vet one.. surely ultimately it's up to them? I guess you could discuss your concerns over with them..

I've got so many things floating around in my head.. hehe!

I know! Very bizarre. I don't think I'd ever ask that!

He also asked some other weird questions. I got offered the job and happily turned it down.

i got asked how i would deal with a difficult member of the team who was more senior than me - certainly caught me on the hop, and took me ages to reply... i was like

'well i would speak to them straight up! or maybe the head nurse,,, actually, no if it was urgent i would go straight to a partner... or would i?.. no head nurse. actually, no, a partner coz if an emergency came up i would need to know i could rely on difficult member of staff, so would want the partners back up.. is that right? ermmm, or i might just buzz the practice manager' etc etc - verbal diarrhoea!
