Euthanasia unfortunately is one of those things as a pet owner we will need to deal with .As a Vet nurse ,i

RE: Does anyone offer pre-euthanasia clinics?

We do! We haven't had much uptake - I think a combination of staff not being so forward with offering them and owners not asking - but I do feel that it makes a big difference to the ones we do see. I'm really pro-pre euth clinics, I do think they really matter.

RE: Does anyone offer pre-euthanasia clinics?

Hi Olivia,I saw that course on Facebook this morning.Definately planning to do this when i have finished the mini courses i have started.Really looking forward to starting these clinics just feel its something that we should really be offering as i always feel euthanasia consults especailly if pts was not originally planned are abit rushed. My practice is very supportive and one of the other nurses has quite an interest tooso really hoping we can make a go of it

RE: Does anyone offer pre-euthanasia clinics?

How lovely,thankyou.

RE: Does anyone offer pre-euthanasia clinics?

I completed the Blue Cross Pet Loss course which had lots of really helpful information about how to support owners through end of life care and euthanasia.
Including holding end of life consultations, discussing palliative care and how we can help our owner and patient through this period and the euthanasia consultation.
I would 100% recommend this to anyone as it has been so helpful to me as I have also had a horrible EOL experience with my own pet and wouldn’t wish it on any other person.

We discuss if they’ve ever had an animal put to sleep before, what to expect at the appointment, what the options are for after, discuss any religious or spiritual practices they may like to include and we also use it as an opportunity to take payment for the euthanasia so that on the day they can just leave.

RE: Does anyone offer pre-euthanasia clinics?

Tracy Timms Good question!

I would recommend looking into Dr Cooney's work as a lot can be applied here in the UK.

Our nurses are referred QOL and EOL calls from the vet team where we aim to make euthanasia nurse led which allows more time. Nurses would have discussed all the options prior to coming to the clinic so that the client has more time to process everything. With QOL calls that nurse may have been speaking to or seeing those owners for sometime prior, helping to create a bond.

Of course we still get appointments which turn into euthanasia's and that means they have not had the pre appointment call but we do what we can, when we can.

I totally agree with what you have said and we should be doing more. We also try where we can to never remove the patient away from its owners and commonly use pre euthanasia sedation to ensure minimal stress.
