We also use a points system and it works really well. The more experienced vets have a higher points setting for surgeries vs say the less experienced or new grad vets. We only have space for 1 op vet a day and some part time staff and try to have a fair balance of everyone getting an op day. The daily op points allowance cannrange from 8 to 16.

We use a pretty basic system of:

1pt- cat castrate, xrays, flush (ears/bums/wounds etc.)

2pts- cat spay, dog cast, rabbit cast, small mass removal

3pts- bitch spay, rabbit spay, multiple mass removals

4pts- complicated spay (giant breed, obese, pyo), soft tissue surgeries, none routine surgery's

We grade dentals 1 to 5 and each one corresponds with the same points.

We add a point for anything additional, eg 1pt added to a castrate with a hernia, or a lump removal with an xray.

Hi. We use a point system for booking in ops. A 2 vet day is 10 points and a 1 vet day is 6 points or no ops if that particular vet prefers to consult.

We don't allocate extra points for the lesser experienced vets but I do manage the diary very carefully and block off any more ops should a particular vet have a lengthy procedure in that I know will take them longer ie a meaty dental.

With the vets who I know are slower, I always round up the points and with consults I add extra gaps in between for them to catch up with notes or consults if they are running behind. It really helps because I know our vets and their particular skill sets so well that I can amend the diary and workload to suit them as much as is possible til the phone rings with an emergency!

We do cat castrate, fna and bloods as 1 point, cat spey and small dog castrate as 2 points, large dog castrate and small bitch spey as 3 points, large bitch spey, stage 1 dental and small lumpectomy 4 points etc etc

We also have to manage this at our practice, I’m interested in hearing if anyone has a system set up that works well :)
