If successful we plan to then add in nurse led Euthanasia and other services. The vet then would go in and discuss the condition, treatment options and we would then take back over for consent/tx.
We are looking at reducing the 30 minute appointments down once we are up to speed with it. I think that whilst it may be a little time consuming, sadly many vets see boosters as a pain, but this way it will allow the nurse to have discussions with the owner regarding different elements of their pets care.

RE: Safari Nurse Consults

[quote userid="35876" url="~/f/clinical-discussions/32534/do-any-other-nurses-have-experience-of-safari-nurse-consults/178767#178767"]I think this is a fantastic idea and gives RVNS more fulfillment of their job, if this was to work in most practices I would hope more nurses would stay in the profession for the fulfillment of the job area, i have never seen this model myself but by what the articles say it sounds like a brilliant idea.
Thank you for your reply. I also think that this is a great stepping stone to allowing nurses to do, and lead more. It will definitely make the public more aware of the Vet Nurse in practice.

I am really looking forward to being involved with this, and to see where it goes.

RE: Safari Nurse Consults

Thanks, it's an interesting concept but not for me.
Then I was brought up with open surgeries so you become fast. Running 10 minute appointments I can usually keep to time and still do exam/drugs and notes. I can see certain clients really loving more time and a relaxed approach, but most want to be in and out. It would also be more expensive for the client for the extra resources.

I'd much rather see a change that allowed RVNs to do boosters without the involvement of the vet. A doctor doesn't do human vaccs.

This could potentially work if very short staffed, but logically I'd be better with a vet in 2 rooms.

RE: Safari Nurse Consults

I have included a link which explains it very well:

I would hope if this model does work and is proved to work that RVN practitioner status could be the next step in plus the client would also know what a veterinary nurse does and can do as they would see them more during both vet and nurse consults which would therefore build their trust in the veterinary nurse. I have been in a practice that has nurse led euthanasia and a dedicated euthanasia room and it worked so well and was nice to see owners not rushed out of the clinic due to other consultations waiting. I would hope that practices start to adopt this idea whether large or small. I know one thing clinical notes would definitley be better, more concise and contain alot more information in each visit. On another plus side as all the notes would be done in the consult it means no more catching up on notes when rammed and then this in turn frees people up for something else and hopefully no more late nights catching up on paperwork for all, that is the hope anyway.

RE: Safari Nurse Consults

can you explain what the Safari method is, please?
