Hi You could also try a "shark fin" bandage to prevent him being able to reach the wound ( in addition to analgesia of course)

I agree with Olivia, multi modal pain relief should be used to prevent interference with the wound.

So with the smallies like rats it is important they have adequate pain relief as they shouldn't chew their wounds unless they are painful. I would be making sure that your patient is on multi-modal analgesia as prescribed by your veterinary surgeon. I have used in the past stretch net and make shift a body suit for them. BC's are not recommended as they need their paws to eat and wash their face in their daily regime. I have used laser light therapy with them as well as this helps the wound heal nicely.
