I am looking at possibly doing a nursing certificate in the next year or so and am researching which route to take.
I wondered if anyone knew the difference or pros and cons over studying for the Advanced certificate in Vet nursing in

RE: Should I do the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or the NCert?

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you so much for your reply. Can I ask who you studied with? Were the lectures pre recorded or live? I'm just wondering how it works in regards to having time off work to attend them or if you can do them in 'your own time'.

RE: Should I do the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or the NCert?

Sarah the new Cert AVNs are now discipline specific compared to the Dip AVN, which was several subjects.

RE: Should I do the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or the NCert?

Hi Emma

I completed the NCert in Dentistry in 2019 with Improve. It was a great course with practical experience as well as lectures and I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in dentistry. I haven't done the Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Nursing so I don't know how it compares, but I would imagine that the Advanced Certificate requires you to complete other work as well, whereas the NCert was all dentistry, so for me was much more targeted to my area of interest.

I hope this helps. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

RE: Should I do the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or the NCert?

HI Emma,

I am currently doing the masters course for Advanced Veterinary Nursing through Harper Adams which means I am doing 2 CertAVN's side by side (Anesthesia, Analgesia and Pain Relief). I am finding them very challenging but I am really enjoying it. It is very much a self directed learning that encourages you to do alot of wider reading around your subjects. I chose those subjects as they are where I have the most personal interest and its what has the mist relevance to my practice also. I've since found I really enjoy researching which isn't something I thought I would ever say. I am doing the Post Grad certs which are level 7

Do what interests you the most would be my advice or you wont really engage with the content as you need to. I cant comment on the NCert as its not a course I have done.

RE: Should I do the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or the NCert?

Hi Laura,

I found it very tough to balance work and a family and was regularly up until the early hours finishing assignments but if you don't have any parental or other responsibilities then as long as you're prepared to give up some of your evenings and weekends then it's fine!

I've noticed that Harper Adams Uni have condensed the anaesthesia Cert AVN down to a year now instead of 2 by reducing the modules from 4 to 3 and increasing the number of credits per module. Would be interesting to see how this compares to the 2 year option.

RE: Should I do the Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing or the NCert?

I’ve just signed up to an NCert.
i have completed both the NCert (Anaesthesia) with Improve in 2020 and more recently the Cert AVN (Anaesthesia).

I wanted to study at Level 6 as I qualified via the diploma route many years ago before the degree was even an option so this is why I chose the Cert AVN. I also liked that it is RCVS accredited.

Personally, I found the taught content and lecturers were much better with the Improve NCert and would recommend this course to anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge in a specific area. Improve have also started doing advanced Certs now too.

The Cert AVN course was, for me, a means to reaching level 6 in an area that I love. This can then lead onto post graduate and even masters if you’re that way inclined! Please feel free to message me if you have any more questions

RE: Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing VS NCert

If you are talking about the ones at myerscough College Vs the Improve International ones.
