I wanted to just add that yes also make up in a 100ml saline bag with 4ml from saline mixed back into 100ml bag to make 0.4mg/ml. Label bag appropriately & keep for this patient.
In my experience the less dilute solutions seem to make patients nauseous, interested to read the above info on potential colloid type effect on bp, which could account for this effect.

This is a human product that is used in vet. Med. off licence- the data sheet instructs administration over 20-30 minutes. That’s good enough for me but your question got me wondering- a brief search on VIN suggests that omeprazole has a colloid effect, so chucking a load of it into the circulation too quickly could cause dramatic blood pressure issues - in humans, irreversible blindness has been reported (data sheet) - presumably because of blown retinas?!

this is the preferred method of reconstitution in human healthcare. As we are using this product off licence we should use the product as per the way it is used in human healthcare

Nick Shackleton , James Colver Cert. Ed, RVN and Jack Player - just want to say thanks for answering so quickly. I've been watching this thread closely because it's one of the first since I've changed the whole basis of the VetNurse Community to being all about asking each other questions and making this place somewhere people know they'll get authoritative answers.

This thread is a good example, and I'm very grateful to you for chipping in. I can see there are a few things I need to tweak (the 'thank expert' link is a throwback to something else which I need to update). But it's nice to see this idea apparently has legs, and I have lots of site developments in the pipeline to make the question format work better (such as notifications and tagging).

We withdraw 4-5mls from a 100ml bag of saline. Reconstitute the vial. Draw up vial. Add back into 100ml bag. Agitate. Making it 0.4mg/ml. Draw up dose and usually administered using syringe driver over 20 mins

but why you do that way? give during 30min? whats ghe benefits on it? was just because manufactor advised?

It doesn’t make any difference. Same here - add 5-10ml saline into omeprazole vial, wait until suspended / agitate, add back to 100ml saline bag to make 0.4mg/ml. Label bag appropriately, dose over 30min. Never mix with No.11

vet insist in 10ml of saline into the vial.... is there any diference? far as i can see two diferent ways of doing things but same result?

I draw up 5ml saline and then add the constituted solution to the rest of the 100ml saline bag to make it 0.4mg/ml to then give slow IV. I got the protocol from manufacturer leaflet & old protocol from Vets now head if SOPs
