What do other practices do regarding dog/cat urinalysis? Do you perform your own in-house urine microscopy? Can you recommend any good CPD? Some of the nursing team here are confident identifying crystals and blood cells but struggle with bacteria

RE: Urine microscopy CPD

There is a facebook group called "veterinary cytology coffeehouse"

Also I registered for free on this group and got access to a free mini course on urinalysis.

This is great advice. Try not to get it so only one person does it all but nurture interests, make them the urine cytology specialist and offer support to others if unsure. Thats's the best way

RE: Urine microscopy CPD

Hello!
In the practices I work in, we would do basic in-house microscopy on urine to check for crystals and intercellular bacteria, so that a treatment plan can be started ASAP. A lot of the time we would send the urine for culture and sensitivity testing at an external lab if infection was suspected. I’ve noticed more and more often that this is the only urine test we send externally.

Personally, I’m quite keen on cytology and microscopy, so I just practiced! I think the more you do it, the more confident you get. I can imagine if someone really isn’t interested in microscopy they may struggle with this. I guess it depends on the make-up of your practice; does everyone need to be able to do everything?

Because I have a personal interest I tend to read more CPD articles about urinalysis, but I couldn’t say if there are any in particular that I would recommend. I wonder if the external lab you use would be able to offer a short course for nurses? I think IDEXX may run courses at a cost.
