when we have a weepy bitch spay we may give a bolus of fluids if not on ivft. We were having a practice discussion on how to measure blood loss. Do people weigh swabs? Or have a standard loss for each small and

RE: Measure Blood Loss

1ml of blood weighs 1.07g (1.06 for a human) Weigh swabs etc :)

That may be the worst thing to do, unless very haenodynamically unstable. Raise BP, dilute clotting factors.

We would give Tranexamic acid

RE: Measure Blood Loss

Yes we weigh swabs. Weigh your usual amout of dry swabs per pack (we use 5s 10s and/or lap swabs). Then weigh the swabs post op the gram difference is the blood lost.

eg...of the top of my head 10 dry swabs weigh 17g. If you weigh the swabs after the op and they weigh 27g. Minus the two and that equals 10g = 10mls of blood loss. Insignificant for a large breed but more resious for a toy breed/cat.

We also measure ammount of irrigation solution in and suctioned fluid out and calculate the blood loss there too.

Hope that made sense

RE: Measure Blood Loss

Hi

A soaked lap swab will hold somewhere between 15 and 20 mls blood and a 10x10cm 12 ply gauze swab 3-5 mls. Non woven swabs hold less - if that helps
