The Girling Course is probably the best available, and is run by people respected in the field of exotic and zoo animal medicine.

The AZEVN (Association of Zoo and Exotic Veterinary Nurses) and BVZS (British Veterinary Zoological Society) hold CPD events for those working within the exotics field. Have a look at their internet pages for information of their next events.

Good Luck,

RE: Exotic nursing cert/ qualifications

Hi

I worked at an exotic referral centre and they wanted all the nurses to take what is now the Girling course. When I did it it was the city and guilds certificate and it was so in depth and super interesting. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone. Plus Simon and Mary are lovely

RE: Exotic nursing cert/ qualifications

I've done the Small Mammal Girling & Fraser one. It's great,I feel like I've learnt loads and actually be able to utilise the information into practice. Hopefully will end up doing the other 4 as well!

I think RVC do some online training courses, not sure how they compare.

RE: Exotic nursing cert/ qualifications

At the moment there is only the Girling and Fraser certificates that cater to nurses for exotic species, there was a merit award but that doesn't look like it been run since 2018. If you don't want to do all 5 modules then you can just pick and choose which ones you want. They are very in depth when it comes to information and is a highly recommended course by those that have taken it. I did all 5 modules but I have known people who have only done 1 or 2 of the modules.

RE: Exotic nursing cert/ qualifications

I did all 5 of them but I guess it's up to whatever you feel is of most interest or use to you. If you ever want to travel to other countries to do exotic animal nursing or wildlife rehab nursing, it's very useful to have the grounding in all taxa.

RE: Exotic nursing cert/ qualifications

Thanks for the reply :)

Did you do all 5 of them or did you pick and choose?

I do have a local wildlife rescue, thats a great idea, thanks!

RE: Exotic nursing cert/ qualifications

Hi Sally,

I looked around for one as well but could only find the Girling and Fraser course. I've completed it, it's very comprehensive and has been extremely useful. After having done this course, I became the 'go-to' person in practice for the more unusual species. If you're near somewhere that does wildlife rescue and rehabilitation that will give you some great experience to go with the formal learning.
