This got us to thinking about what securing tape/fixing is best practice to use, for IV cannula securement.

RE: IV Cannula Tape.......we need your help.

Ooh, thank you!
Millpledge make Anifilm which is a clear tape so ideal for monitoring intravenous cannula sites. It is lightweight and hypoallergenic too.
You can order individual rolls so it is convenient to trial in practice.

I hope this helps with your search for the perfect tape!

We find that the 3m micropore has the perfect amount of stickiness and stretch. We have tried different brand versions, but they just do not compete.

RE: IV Cannula Tape.......we need your help.

its white zinc oxide - I get it from either pioneer or IMS - not as sticky as the pink one but holds well and doesn't tear skin or hair when removing. It would be nice for long term placement to have something transparent so we can monitor for phlebitis without disturbing the tape, and sterile so we know we're not trapping anything around the cannula site, but the perfect tape is like the perfect suture material - I don't think it exists. Sadly our patients don't sit still and won't always leave it alone, so we need something strong enough that they can't pull it out easily which means I don't think the transparent stuff is strong or sticky enough. Even if rolls came sterilised, it's not necessary enough to warrant using a fresh sterie roll for each patient as the small risks are outweighed by the wastage and cost implications that unfortunately come with running a business and a paid service. I look for a tape that doesn't hurt or distress the patient on removal, and sticks well whether wet or dry. I haven't personally noticed skin reactions or anything else concerning from NVS's tape, so I haven't found any drawbacks.

It sticks well, comes off relatively atraumatically without Ease-Off (great for cats because they hate Ease-Off and spirit) and practically falls off when Ease-Off is used, isn't stretchy (I know stretchy tape can expand with the limb, but if it's stretched even a little bit when applied then it applies pressure and makes the paw swell in my experience). It still sticks when the limb is wet unlike duropore, and since I started using it I've never had a cannula slip out of it and I don't see swollen paws. I really like Siltape too, but have very limited experience with it as we just have one roll that I get out for the super fractious cats, and I'm worried that once it's gone I won't be allowed any more.

RE: IV Cannula Tape.......we need your help.

We use tensoplast for the first piece of tape under and over the top of the IV then duropore over the t-connector.
