we have plastic ones and currently they’re cleaned and then left in a tub of instrument cleaner between uses. I'm by no means an expert - while it is an environmental pathogen it can be spread form patient to patient in a human health care setting - and is considered an important nosocomial infection, there is also concern about multidrug resistant strains. (though it isn't an important pathogen outside the health care setting unless it gets somewhere like a wound, or into the lungs or urinary tract )

So no reason why dogs should be different I wouldn't of thought. :)

We have the metal interchangable heads also and clean them using enzymatic cleaner and cool water then if we have seen a pseudomonas patient or very dirty ears we autoclave them directly after drying. We also autoclave ours routinely. If the cleaner is damaging the plastic I would leave them soaking for the amount of time it is stated on the back of the bottle rinse and leave to dry. I would also make sure everyone that makes up the cleaner is following the dilution rates and it isn't being made too strong. :D
