Maybe she's chasing the £ - we all have bills to pay and it's not like we nurses generally command much of a salary as an employee!

My take on it is that if you are employed by a practice, even on a part-time basis, then you have a duty to them and should respect their wishes.

But that is not to say that there aren't employers out there who WOULD be happy for you to steer your own course and work elsewhere if you need to. I have done it myself - as a parent, working around school hours and school holidays sometimes I needed the flexibility to work where and when I wanted to, under my own steam, in addition to working at a practice that was giving me regular part-time hours. It depends on how much they value you as a member of staff, and how much they recognise that people's needs are different.

Having said all that, it would be a bit Tom Long to take work at a nearby / competitor practice. That is something I wouldn't do, out of respect and loyalty to the practice that was employing me.

It all boils down to trust and loyalty.

I'd say its not particularly straightforward. There are a number of issues I see as an employer - it states in our contracts that no other work without our prior consent.

Conflict of interest and confidentiality.

Working time directive - hours worked elsewhere count

Affect on your work in the practice - will you turn up on Tuesday knackered having worked solid Fri/Sat/Sun night?

Why are you part time - If I had let a nurse reduce her hours and then she wanted to work elsewhere I'd be very cross

If you are wanting more hours - have you asked if that's possible in your current practice?

I would not give consent for a nurse to locum at other competitive practices.

Well then it is up to you to either go self employed and work wherever you like or negotiate with the practice that you want to work for that you have the freedom to work elsewhere as well :)
