Any solutions? I used to work for one of the charities approached and have to say their response was very concerning. How many more genuine cases that cannot get assistance then turn into serious welfare cases where the animal suffers? I wouldn't have let it go on any longer without vet exam - had the owner not managed to get the dog seen by a vet on Friday then it would have been coming into work with me.

Sad all round, the owner wanted to do the best by the dog and was trying to do the best she could with the resources she had available but the help she needed just wasn't there for her. It is this dog I will remember every time I see one of the begging ads on the telly.

(I don't have a problem with the PDSA as it was too far away - but the other two )

RE: dog with dry tongue

Sad ending. Have been a bit naughty today and just told them ignore what they have been told on the phone and to turn up at local charity clinic to be seen. Wouldn't normally do this but I am really worried it wont see a vet otherwise as the owner really really doesn't have the money. (marriage breakup - husband has walked away from her, the kids, the mortgage and the dog, she is in receipt of benefits) I have offered to give her the consult money and a bit extra to bring it to ours but she wont accept.

RE: dog with dry tongue

Tricky one. Is it just sore because hanging out of mouth or because dog also has xerostomia (dry mouth) cause by something else? Without going to vet...encouraging dog to drink could help keep it moist, perhaps by flavouring water with juice from tins of fish and the like. The fact that it's worse first thing does suggest that water intake does help, with it drying out overnight. But I agree, does need to see vet to investigate cause of dry mouth....could be immune-mediated disease or neurological condition causing tongue to hang out? If this person has low funds, is there a local charity clinic they could visit?
