Im a registered student vet nurse in a small practice and go to college one day a week doing the Level 3 diploma in vet nursing and wanted to ask any other svn’s, rvn’s, clinical coaches, vna’s whether it’s quite normal to be shown/trained to do

RE: Vet nurse training in practice

Thanks for replying and your advice on this i will have a chat and see how it goes

RE: Vet nurse training in practice

Essentially, it’s harder to relearn something once you've formed a habit. I’d just try and have a meeting with your CC and voice your concerns. It’s probably just what happened with her and she’s not doing it maliciously. There’ every chance of you told her you want to be shown the OSCE standard when trained she might be happy to change.

RE: Vet nurse training in practice

Yep exactly my view also this is just one example but so many more of similar sorts. My cc just says everywhere does it and doesn’t take my view on board . Thank you for replying and reassuring me that my thoughts on it are valid

RE: Vet nurse training in practice

personally I would train that correctly first time! I think you should speak to your CC and ask why it was done this way. Knowing a proper SG is important and if you’re not calibrating before each reading it could easily be wrong.

RE: Vet nurse training in practice

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I probably should of given an example . So for doing an SG and dip test I normally just get the dip test strip, lay it on some blue roll, take a pipette and take some urine from sample tube, drop a bit on each square, record the result. SG drop a bit of urine sample on refractometer prism with pipette hold up to light and read numbers. Spray some diluted Anstel on prism wipe and put away.

But suddenly im being told ive got an IV visit in an hour and heres the OSCE sheet for how your meant to do it, get it right and don’t forget all the steps.

I was then putting gloves on, cleaning the refractometer prism with distilled water 1st, then calibrating it, then putting urine on, recording result, then rinsing prism under cold water tap, wiping it with blue roll, re checking calibration and storing it. All of which id never done before. It annoyed me because I didn’t understand why id only been told to read this sheet before IV arrival and never witnessed anyone doing it properly. I want to do things properly from day 1,

Is this just the way it is? Its not perfect but its kind of accepted and im being fussy? Or is this just plain wrong and my CC is being unreasonable? Sorry for long message

RE: Vet nurse training in practice

Mind if we ask for an example? Sometimes tasks are done not to an entirely OSCE standard! ie, X-raying what you can fit on the plate, rather than a specific area! But other than that things shouldn’t be too different. And you definitely shouldn’t be expected to outright lie or To cover anything up.

(Apologies for any typos- on phone)
