None of the bits that actually matter to normal veterinary practice are referenced by any evidence whatsoever. I said this somewhere recently, does it matter what concentration we use? Lots of vet practices make up light pink solution nowhere near 50% Hibi and it seems to work very well. Lots of people use concentric circles and don't have issues with post op infections. Lots of practices use shared spirit spray with no problems.

We have moved to the final spray using Hibitane (chlorhex in alcohol).

We need to know:

Risk of infection using forwards and backwards vers concentric circles

Risk of contamination from multi use sprays

Reduction in post op infections using sterile gloves for final prep

Until then I'm quite happy with light pink Hibi mix, a mix of back and forth and circles, followed by a spray. Our clinical audit finds very very low rates of post op infections.

If I start using vastly more Hibiscrub, sterile gloves, disposable applicators then there is more waste, more cost but for what benefit?!

So far I can't see this as anything other than an opinion article.

RE: Surgical skin prep

James Colver Cert.
