I'm happy with cotton wool and Hibiscrub made up so it's light pink (no idea of the concentration but nowhere near 50%). We even finish with a spray of spirit. If someone does a good quality large scale piece of research showing a better way then I'll listen and change. If we see a run of post op infections then I'll change. Until then I'm going to ignore many of the so called experts with little evidence other than anecdote (and often with a solution to sell me).

We swapped to Sterilium for vet hands and I was sceptical, but the evidence supports it. Works really well.

RE: woven v non woven

I used cotton wool until about 10 yrs ago - never had any problem with it and had been using it 20+ years. To be told - its old fashioned, dust particles and fibres ..... and all the rest so I used swabs, new practice I moved to used swabs so swabs there too. Then reading all the guff again its now swapped from woven to non woven - so I swap to non woven. And now listening to a student its not non woven I should be using but woven.

Does anybody else get fed up trying to keep up with this stuff? If there was a problem ie post op nastiness I could understand it but if you are not getting problems? I know you have to move with the times but hell this is turning into a merry go round and I'm getting dizzy and want to get off.

RE: woven v non woven

We use cotton wool for skin prep. Thats all I ever saw as a student. May use woven swabs initially if very dirty (farm/shooting injury). I understood all you NEED was friction, so back and forth best.
