I know metronidazole needs to be given slowly, but how slow?
Here's how my colleagues do it: 1ml/min; 2mls/min; over 20-30mins regardless of the amount; little and often.
cost of syringe drivers aren't cheap but it's all relative and depends on the number of cri's etc you might be using, if you have drip pumps you could administer that way - not my favourite way of doing it especially if you have lots of different staff in the kennel area it's easy to go on automatic pilot and just press run or adjust the volume to be infused when it beeps and end up giving an overdose if you do go this way then putting tape over the buttons with metronidazole written all over should stop that

RE: administering metronidazole
We don't have a syringe driver unfortunately. Are they expensive?
depending on how often you are needing to sit with a patient and for how long - then some practices find it cheaper to leave a nurse in the kennel rather than plugging something in at the wall, especially if your patient is close obs. There are a couple of cheaper options to an infusion pump - either the balloon infusors or the spring infusors could be worth looking at?

RE: administering metronidazole

We don't have a syringe driver unfortunately.
