Ask him for his evidence base, as a learning point for you, the other vets and nurses. See what he comes up with. Play naive and say you stopped stocking them because they worsened outcomes and you'd be super keen to learn what has changed recently.

Thanks for your replies.

I remember using colloids when i first started nursing, but many have been discontinued due to the scepticalness over their use. Hence why we dont stock it anymore.

But i have a new vet who is insisting on stocking a form, but neither the gelofusine nor the voluven i have said i can get hold of is what he wants. xx

Colloids kill, the evidence from humans is practically a universally worse outcome (beware of some smaller studies with surrogate outcomes). We dumped them many years ago and the only colloid we use would be blood (generally whole, but do sometimes have FFP is blood collected and not used).

It actually frightens me how judiciously we used to use them

Preference for voluven. Also have gelifusin. Also have FFP and whole blood on standby. We are an ECC practice
