Im seeking information for a colleague. She is looking for a mask that she can wear whilst the animals are recovering after an anesthetic - she is pregnant & does not want to breathe in any residual gases. Has anyone (UK) used them & if so where

RE: Masks

excellent research and info skills Sal the 1st

RE: Masks

I have used the phone a friend option - he is a doctor and this is what he said.

Has the colleague been advised by her GP that it would be safe for her to use a respirator as they aren't suitable for everybody.

forced respiration affects blood pressure and if there is already a problem with hypertension, which commonly occurs with pregnancy, a mask isn't going to improve things for mum or baby

there is a real risk of overheating and that can happen in as little as 10 mins use especially when its hot

better to address any environmental issues if there are any and reduce your risks that way

he is going to send me some links

We have inherited the fear based on such studies which although have been subsequently debunked, the fear remains. It's understandable as, naturally, no one wants harm, to befall a mother and baby.

I am wholeheartedly behind supporting a pregnant colleague who wants to be cautious and so, despite the reassurances given by the debunking of the hazard, would wish to support them in any (sensible) way I could. Clearly turning up for work in a full Hazard Suit wouldn't work (and certainly the boss shouldn't be expected to pay for one in this example either!). However, provision of appropriate air extraction/exchange/ventilation in the Recovery area, in the OP's practice IS a requirement. If not, the nurse has justification in my view to decline the duties or be provided with appropriate PPE. Then again, ALL personnel exposed to the same air quality should, gravid or not.

Yes?

I may have missed something, but the most recent evidence cited in the link is 18 years old. I have no doubt that our standards of anaesthetic gas scavenging has improved in the last 18 years, and I'd take studies with a pinch of salt from the 70's when scavenging was non existent and we used very different drugs.

As long as you avoid mask/box inductions and either active scavenging or dose monitoring is in place then there should be no risk to the pregnancy. That is the advice I've had when it comes to pregnant employees and health and safety in the workplace.

RE: Masks

its the in thing if you are using thinners, dope or sanding wooden air frames.

I reckon anybody voluntarily wanting to wear a respirator is in more danger of passing out and injuring themselves and baby than from anaesthetic gas. I have had to use one when I have been doing restoration and they are really horrible. If anaesthetic gas is deemed to be such a great risk then your colleague needs to be in an another area doing something else. I presume you are carrying out gas monitoring periodically - should give you an indication of what is or isnt present.

If you really, really want to go down this route then try 3m - mine is particulate and gas - but its horrible and will take some getting used to. Just watch out for your colleague hitting the deck while she adjusts. The one below is similar to the one I use. Wouldn't recommend to use them to anybody if you don't need to

Has it been identified as required by the practice's risk assessment for her pregnancy? What evidence is there these exist, work and are necessary?

No such thing is used by pregnant human theatre nurses, I was speaking to one recently.

I think we need to put such risks into context and not necessarily pander to every whim, just because someone is pregnant and thinks something is a great idea.
