Please can you post your recent experiences of Robert Jones bandages? I'm talking as a first aid measure, prior to orthopaedic intervention, as well as post repair. Do you have a preferred alternative method which you have found works? Or do

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion

Personally I really like them for for 1st aid as long as the # is distal to elbow/stifle & as long as put on by experienced personnel. I've seen them being put on for # humerus/femur and they are pointless & actually damaging in those cases.

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion
. However they are only as good as the person applying it
Seconding this. Bandages can cause more harm than good, particularly if they are not closely monitored. For example, the orthopaedic surgeons I have worked with would never send a patient out of the practice with a RJ on as the potential for complications is huge. However they can be very good for analgesia/reducing inflammation when applied correctly in practice.

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion

We used to use them a lot when I was in general practice, found them to be good for immobilising prior to surgery the next day and were comfortable for the patient.. However they are only as good as the person applying it plus I have witnessed some people putting them on when the fracture is too high up the leg so rendering the bandage more than useless and more harmful due to the rotating/pendulum effect. Really only good for midshaft # where there is equal amount of bandage on either side of the break.

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion

We do them relatively routinely to immobilise short-term prior to emergency referral to ortho specialists (i.e. we've seen a pet with a severe fracture that needs same or next-day attention from an ortho vet). Probably wouldn't do them if we're taking a 'rest and painkillers' approach, but we'd seek specialist opinion in such cases.

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion

I work for an orthopedic surgeon in usa, are you asking about post op fractures? My surgeon will have us do splinted bandages (modified robert jones) with RU fxs and tibial fxs or after doing MPLs if its an active dog to immobilise. But all other orthopedic , not unless it is extra bloody. Would you like pictures?

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion

I'm finding RJB an outmoded and unpopular choice with Bone Vets. I did work with one that would use it post op with cold compress incorporated to reduce swelling, that was cool. Otherwise, no I haven't seen, nor applied in about 5 years.

RE: Robert Jones bandages - discussion

I saw my first one last night. I work OOH so we saw a pug that had a suspected broken elbow. Placed a Robert Jones to imobalise and then to go to their normal vets today for full work up and sort out repair/referral from there. Been in practice 6 years and never seen one or done one besides OSCE practice. We mainly only used it as a precaution for before they go to their normal vets (and probable to keep costs down). Had pain relief as so on as well and advised to confine as well.
