i ordered it once by mistake and opened it so it couldn't be returned. Guilty much. But then my boss needed a Santa beard. Hey hey! Snippety snip snip and Hey Presto! Boss looked sharp. Boss was happy. I was redeemed. As far as I know the remaining roll is still in the Xmas dekkies box. Best place for it!

Unfortunately i think that IMS still market the gause rolls. Im not so sure VN's of today would put up with a lot of what us 'dinosaurs' were made to do in the past! LOL

Unfortunately i think that IMS still market the gause rolls. Im not so sure VN's of today would put up with a lot of what us 'dinosaurs' were made to do in the past! LOL

OMG I remember making swabs - nothing as dainty as a size 10 blade for us tho we had the size 24 they use for pm's. I shouldnt think the rolls of swabbing even exist now? what a shame just think of all the fun the next generation have missed

OMG! I remember doing this in the 1980's! To top this off, the syringes and needles were free from Nobivac with vaccines. how things have changed - FOR THE BETTER!

Have never worked anywhere with sterile lube but we always used to have 2 tubes - one labelled 'dirty' for thermometers etc', and the other labelled 'clean' which was only for squeezing out onto clean things so while never 'sterile' hopefully wouldn't be a filthy cess-pit of germs!

forgot to mention - as well as doing the ky in blood tubes I also used to split the sedistain into 5 plain blood tubes so only a little bit got contaminated if somebody wasn't as careful as they should be.

I remember gigasept - I remember reading the data sheet to it as well once I never ordered the stuff again

ah yes who can forget that (you haven't worked in Grimsby have you?)

1st stage - take apart your syringes and soak in dilute savlon paying special attention to and 'lumpy bits'

2nd stage thorough rinsing under a cold tap, again checking carefully for residue and place on a clean white towel to dry

3rd stage once dry quick squirt of silicon and reassemble discarding any syringes that have lost their markings

4th stage (optional) replace the cleaned and dry syringe back inside its plastic casing which is clearly marked single use only

this was the nicer job on the Friday - you really knew if you were in the bad books on a Friday when you got the large animal visit boxes and wellies to clean and if you were in the real black book it was cleaning the vehicles after a particularly cruddy visit

defrost =very quickly in a pocket. I would prefer to use the single use sachets too but when I used to make ours up in blood tubes it was because we had a boss that was tighter than a ducks butt and saw no issue with using the same ky which had been used for lord knows what. The outside of it looked 'unsavoury' so who knows what was growing in the inside?? -I suppose it could have gone either way - either it could have been a culture for mass destruction or alternatively a universal cure for every nasty going. Sadly we will never know, but whatever it was I didnt think it needed to be made at home in somebody's bladder.

I think it would be an interesting exercise to compare the cost of blood tube + KY + nurses time to make up, VS the cost of what is probably a large quantity of sachets of actual sterile lubricant. Don't get me wrong, I hate single use plastic as much as the next person but in this instance I think I'd push in this direction... reminds me of the hours I used to soak, scrub and autoclave DISPOSABLE PLASTIC SYRINGES then reassemble them for a backwards boss... probably cost him more for my time than just buying new! Ridiculous.

I used to use a plain blood tube fill it with ky using a syringe and then keep the tubes in the freezer and defrost as needed - didnt affect the ky at all and made sure that when we needed it for catheters etc that it hadnt had a filthy thermometer anywhere near it

Thank you for your reply. I had no idea you could do this. Is your wholesaler Centaur? I think it probably worked out more cost effective to make our own pots..

Would be grateful if anyone else makes their own, and how they go about doing this..
