Opinions please.....

Would you bandage to include the foot of a large dog when placing on fluid therapy?????

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

I looked into this a lot before, I have never included the foot as was taught not to because of what the researcher suggests (I also replace whole foot bandages for small bandages).
The bandage is there to primarily protect the IV, patients are usually placed on fluids because they are dehydrated the tape is placed when the patient is dehydrated so can become tighter once the patient is rehydrated. If the paw is not enclosed then if the tape becomes too tight the paw will swell and we then know to replace the tape. If the paw is enclosed then the patient is still uncomfortable because the tape is still too tight but we just can't see a swollen paw any more, instead they start shaking there whole leg with the paw enclosed sometimes. with cats they walk in their litter tray and then the whole leg bandage needs to be changed because the urine wicks up it as someone mentioned above, with dogs you can cover it when taking them out to toilet but personally I think it's best to see the paw start to swell if everything is too tight. Sorry I've just had a massive rant, this is something I obviously get annoyed about

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

Personally I dont like including foot but some of the other staff do

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

I find cats hate it so I always sneaky beaky replace whole foot bandages with smaller ones on my nightshifts

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

I don't like bandaging the whole foot as you can not see swellings.

I have always and will continue to just bandage a few inches above and below the iv insertion point.

My practice that i work for bandages the whole foot and they will replace my bandages because they don't like/agree with what i do.

I dontt argue i just get on with it.

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

as said above, we don't routinely include feet in iv bandages unless there is an issue. I don't think i've ever done it with a dog, usually changing the bandage and/or tape and a little bit of effleurage usually does the trick

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

For a large leggy dog I would probably only bandage a couple of inches above & below the tapings as that's going to be a lot of wasted bandage to get all the way down to the foot, and as long it's not too tight it shouldn't swell. However if it's got stumpier legs and the bandage is likely to sit across the carpus and possible dig in & cause swollen foot then I would include the foot (I tend to leave it open at the bottom anyway to feel the toes.)

RE: Drip Bandages including the foot??

not routinely...in fact we don't routinely include the foot in any IV line bandages only if there is evidence of swelling, as long as it isn't placed tightly then you should be ok.....bandaging feet can actually lead to issues with urine wicking up it and saturating the tape and causing an infection around the IV site
