Just a quick question.....I am locuming in a practice that have a £5 CPL neutering scheme just now and the practice owner is not including the post op pain relief in the price ( they get a Metacam injection on the day!). Should it be covered

RE: Pain relief!

[quote user="James Colver Cert.

Definitely. The C4 neuter scheme was a fixed amount for spays/castrates, but the charity would still pay a reduced fee for cats going home with a buster collar or 3ml metacam.

RE: Pain relief!

Yep!
To be honest, we don't give them a lot of choice when it comes to NSAID's post op.

[/quote]

fair does if they actually need it but animals are individuals just as we are and if we automatically dish out NSAIDs even if they don't need them aren't we falling into the same bad habit that practices had with antibiotics not so many years ago?

RE: Pain relief!

We see a fair few neutering vouchers come through from CPL, but never neutering for a fiver!

With all of our cat neutering, voucher or not, the clients all receive a full estimate of costs for everything (procedure, post op pain relief and buster collar). Even if they have already stated the CPL voucher will cover some costs, we always make sure they are aware that THEY are responsible for additional fees (NSAID's and b-collar) at the time of admit.

As a practice we don't send males home with further NSAID's but we do give a 3ml bottle of Metacam to the females. Obviously if the client requests additional pain relief for the males we will provide it.

To be honest, we don't give them a lot of choice when it comes to NSAID's post op. It's included in the estimate and we provide it at a cost to the client if they present a CPL voucher.
We have never had a client complain about the charge as nobody really want's their pet in pain, although we do have a fair few refuse a buster collar.
We just ensure they are always made aware of additional charges when they call the clinic, at the time of the admit and during the discharge. I think people would generally be more accommodating if they are made aware.

RE: Pain relief!

Hi,

Somewhere along the line the owner has to take some responsibility for their pet and its needs, but in saying that if you have a good surgeon with a small incision that goes straight in with no fishing around that one shot of an NSAID may be all that is needed.

RE: Pain relief!

Sadly there are a lot of pets that go home with just the one NSAID injection on board. However, I think they should go home one much more - but in this instance of a very cheap (almost free) neutering scheme, the client should have the cost passed on to them.

RE: Pain relief!

Hi Kirsty,

I've worked in all kinds of practices and it seems to me that there's no hard and fast rule. Therefore my answer is... it depends what the charity will cover the cost of, how it is promoted to the client (ie at first contact they are told PO pain relief is included or not included), and/or what the practice protocol is.

Naturally my preference would be for every patient to go home with PO analgesia but some clients cannot or will not pay for it. I quote one rather forthright client collecting his cat, after a spay, when I queried if he would like to take some for her comfort.. "Nah, she'll just 'ave t'suck it up"... My face was apparently a bit of a picture...
