hi,

I am also very interested in volunteering but I find most of the programmes quite expensive...
Any tips to afford them?

WVS definitely a good place to start but depends on what you want to do! I've volunteered at the following and can give more info if any peak your interest:
Soi Dog - Thailand
Elephant Nature Park - Thailand (been here 3 times on 3 separate projects)
Matang Wildlife Reserve, Orangutan Conservation - Borneo
Wildlife Conservation - Kangaroo Island, Australia
African Conservation Experience game vet programme - South Africa
BAWA dog shelter - Bali

There's pros and cons to a lot of voluntary work. PM me if you want more info :)

If you type "volunteer" in the search box top right of this page you'll get a load of previous threads on this subject, but the Esther Honey foundation in the Cook Islands is a really great project!

It depends how long you have to volunteer, i have volunteered in Borneo before and i would recommend it to anyone but they like volunteers to be there for at least a month. There are places in Thailand, the Caribbean, Greece, Romania and India that take volunteers for a couple of weeks. WVS has information about some of the projects.
