Medetomidine has the obvious disadvantage of lowering BP and making veins hard to find. What do people use as alternatives or in combinations?

RE: Sedation at PTS

We have started using 5mls pentobarb iP for sedation for cats as per compassion understood protocol and it works really well :) The cats tolerate iP really well not even needing restraint which is nice for them and the owners, then nicely sedated without flat veins.

RE: Sedation at PTS
We always place an IV catheter, if the patient is okay then we will place this before sedation out the back and then take back through to owner and then sedate.
Same for us :) Just makes life so much easier.

RE: Sedation at PTS

Thanks for the info guys :) We've amended our protocol from Dom/Torb to ACP/Ket as we've found that to work really nicely. Can add ket if required. I'm certain breeds we will use acp. We always place an IV catheter, if the patient is okay then we will place this before sedation out the back and then take back through to owner and then sedate.

Really just depends on the patient.

RE: Sedation at PTS

Used dom/torb then placed iv catheter to admin euthatal.
Usually use dom/torb, sometimes ketamine.
