Just wondering what drug combinations people use for rabbit speys and castrations for their premedication and post op meds?

S/C metoclop ,meloxicam

TIVA:lateral ear vein,24g, premed medetomidine to effect, induction propofol to effect. Top up propofol as required, maintained O2 mask.

Once procedure complete, antiseden slow IV to effect,5-10ml saline IV

Just wondering if you still have the paper or could direct me on where to find it as increasing the metacam might make our bunny recoveries a little smoother!

Thanks xx

RE: Rabbit protocol

I find that the recovery is much better with metaclopramide pre op and cisapride post op as the drugs stimulate different parts of the intestine so our buns tend to wake up and eat before home, which is always reassuring.

Metacam wise, for our surgeries and dentals we use a dose of 1.5mg/kg which is quite a bit higher than the 0.5mg/kg we used previously, There was a study done in 2006 and after reading it last year I implemented a trial and we've never looked back. This dose is only safe for 5 days or less but for spays and castrates it works a treat. We've not had to provide additional opiod analgesia since we started using the higher dose.

Hope this helps x

RE: Rabbit protocol

Thanks for all these. We tend to use medetomidine, butorphanol, and ketamine along with metoclopramide and metacam, with metacam continuing post op. Similar to you Jessica, do you find your patients are comfortable on this without the need for additional buprenorphine postoperatively? Understand the disadvanatge of opioids in terms of gut motility but just curious how people find rabbits cope postoperatively.

RE: Rabbit protocol

Hi!

We give sedastart alvegesic and narketan (dom/Butorphanol/ket) IM alongside Metacam and Metoclopramide as premed. Once asleep we place the vgel and attach this to our cap no graph on our multi monitor. While it doesn't provide accurate information as we only have cat, dog and horse settings on ours, it does show a wave formation when attached which helps to monitor that the v gel is in place. We maintain on sevoflo and prior to surgery while the vet gets prepped we give peri op fluids split between sc and iv. Thermal support is obviously in place throughout and sedastop given. Our buns go home with Metacam and Cisipride for 4 days too.

Hope this helps x

RE: Rabbit protocol

We use a protocol slightly similar to above - Metoclop and Buprenorphine given 20 minutes before Domitor/Ketamine and Metacam, and IVFT as standard (rate of 3ml/kg/hr as rabbit maintenance)

We wouldn't routinely add in Baytril unless there was an indication to do so, and would never use the 5% baytril in bunnies.

I *think* some of the bunny experts now recomment that rabbits for GA are also given Zantac on admit as well.

Would love to try the vgel supraglottic jobbies but they are very expensive, we dont have enough rabbit procedures to justify it - and others have told me that they have a habit of becoming displaced on the journey from prep to theatre.

We give me metacam baytril and emeprid subcut on admit. Then we use domitor vetergesic and ketamine all IM . Obviously we then pre oxygenate them and use antisedan for reversal when finished. We will use isoflo if needed and keep them warmed up with bubble wrap and blankets etc. We send them all home with metacam and emeprid for 5 days post op too.
