I've recently just qualified and still getting use to working as a qualified nurse. I've recently been given the responsibility to find a rectal thermometer with a probe for theatre, so we can monitors the patients temperature continuously

RE: Rectal thermometers

In one of my old practices we used to use a vivarium temperature monitor, and cover the probe end with one of those plastic rectal thermometer covers. I always questioned the accuracy of this at the time, but the qualified nurses and vets seemed quite happy with it!

RE: Rectal thermometers

thank you for your help you've been really helpful and give me another idea.

RE: Rectal thermometers

Vetronics also do the minitemp, which has a really long cable attached to the probe so if as Suzanna says you're going down the rectal route, this is what you want! (we use one and it's great, I find it pretty reliable)

You probably wont find specifically what you are looking for. The reason being is that the easier/cleaner/and more common way to continuously monitor temp under GA is via the oesophageal route. Basically a long flexible probe slides down the oesophagus, and is placed within the thoracic cavity. This gives an accurate core temperature, which is also better than rectal which can be affected by poo/air etc.

Most multiparameter monitors have the option of attaching a temp probe. Im sure you probably can get ones that just to Temp, but have never used one myself. Often combined with just a pulse ox too.

Vetronics do a nice oesophageal stethoscope with a temp probe incorporated that would be worth looking in to. (Just so you know, you can also use a oesophageal stethoscope along with a temp probe - the oesophagus is nice and stretchy after all!)

If (for some reason) you/practice really want to go down the rectal route (:-p) you can use oesophageal probes with a disposable rectal thermometer cover over them. Also, some of the handheld digital thermometers can be set to run continuously but obviously viewing it can be a problem if its covered by drapes.

Hope this helps your search a bit. Happy to be of further help if I can be! Here is a picture I just found i had

Happy temp monitoring!
