Came across something different today with a new vet. They dispensed caninsulin and passed it to the owner with an ice pack. Does anyone else do this? Ive never worked anywhere that does.

that would be for insulin that is currently in use. but not for insulin that is in its packet to but used when the original runs out... insulin has to be stored at fridge temperature... I know that from being diabetic myself. insulin pens in use can be left out but all other insulin for replacement should be stored at fridge temperature. over exposure to a constant temperature can denature the insulin this not work correctly.. trust me I notice this with a pen that has been in use for the last week or so. to a fresh cartridge. also I have done the Diabetic practice advisor course.

yes - I use the gel packs that come with the idexx order - we always have some in the bottom of the fridge for this reason, they come in really handy in the summer as quite a few of our clients travel a reasonable distance, (they make good cold packs for bumps and stings too with no risk of burn damage like you would get from ice). Must admit if the weather outside is cool and they are going straight home I don't dispense this way as a routine. We have a client with a diabetic cat who collects her insulin in one of the metal insulated cups which I thought was a brilliant idea when I saw it.

Ed, RVN

Shouldn't be necessary - I was told by MSD that both the vetpen cartridges AND the small bottles of insulin are stable out of the fridge for 28days as long as they don't go over 25 degrees.

I was told that the reason for keeping it in the fridge is to help prevent bacterial growth rather than risking denaturing the insulin - the reason why it's OK to leave the loaded vetpen out of the fridge is that it's only being broached once when the new cartridge is put in, as opposed to a bottle that is constantly being drawn from and exposed to air.
