I always thought that 3 days past the due date for dogs and cats was a call for concern and veterinary attention should be sought. However, there seems

RE: Pregnancy in cats and dogs

Ditto I use Panacur, granules for big dogs, little dogs sometimes take a full bottle of the liquid which they can use for the pups as well (comes with dose rates for pregnant mums, pups and adults with the leaflet).

RE: Pregnancy in cats and dogs

I've always used Panacur...

Pregnant Bitches

Administer 25mg fenbendazole per 1kg (2.2lbs) bodyweight daily from day 40 of pregnancy continuously to 2 days post-whelping (approximately 25 days).

Practical dosage recommendations:

1 g sachet /dose Treats 8kg (17.6lb) bodyweight dosed daily for approx. 25 days

1.8 g sachet / dose Treats 16kg (35.2lb) bodyweight dosed daily for approx. 25 days

4.5 g sachet /dose Treats 40kg (88lb) bodyweight dosed daily for approx. 25 days

For bitches weighing over 40kg, additional sachets are required according to the additional bodyweight.

As this treatment of pregnant bitches is 98% effective, puppies from these bitches should themselves be treated with a 3 day course at 2 and 5 weeks of age with Panacur 2.5% or 10% Liquid Wormer or Panacur Paste. Treat the bitch at the same time at the routine adult dose rate (i.e. 100mg/kg as a single dose).

Do you also have a list of wormers that are okay for use on the bitch. Would these tend to be given on day 45?

Also, out of interest do any products exist yet for urine testing of relaxin?

Thank you both again for helping with so much detail :)

RE: Pregnancy in cats and dogs

The 'due date' can very often be calculated wrongly, because of the long survival of ova and sperm in the female reproductive tract the fertilisation can take place a few days after the mating (and many breeders mate the bitch multiple times so it could be any of those makings that results in pregnancy...) so I would be cautious about diving in with measures to bring about parturition if there is any doubt (premature pups don't have great viability). We tell people the temperature thing, if you are very well equipped the Premate tests can be used (they measure progesterone), and obviously if labour appears to start and not progress (non productive straining, gap between pups, straining then everything stops, discharge/meconium from the vulva etc) then to bring them in.

Its always the way that hobby breeders/pet owners bring them in too early, and breeders wait too long...

RE: Pregnancy in cats and dogs

For dogs: 58-70 days can be normal but if you don't know when they ovulated this is not much use really. If you have a good imager they can sometimes estimate age based on size of fetus. Best way to estimate birth is temperature taking.. take it BID (or TID if bitch is very tolerant) from about day 55 (to get bitches normal temp) The bitch will normally drop 1 degree from normal though in my experience any temp recorded lower than 37.2 indicates labor should begin within 24 hours. If temp dropped longer than 24h and no signs of labor i advise a vet check.

The royal canin website is actually pretty well written and nicely laid out for owners to look at, they can make a diary to put in when she needs worming etc.
