have you been able to help your client find a good diet yet?

it does sounds like it would be good to have a (phone) consult with a veterinary nutritionist specialist. http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/vet/services/small-animals/vets/services/nutritionservice

otherwise my vet pointed this one out to me recently: https://secure.balanceit.com/ Registration is free

RE: Weight Clinics on Home-Cooked Diets?
If you work out his calorie requirements could you then google the various foods he has to find the calories - there must be plenty of resources for this for humans trying to count the calories, however you also need to consider if its balanced. May be very time consuming though!!
I think this is going to be a time-consuming one whatever happens to be honest! I'm really inexperienced with these diets so I'd have to find help for formulating anything, but this is a really good idea for working out what she's being fed just now when I get her food diary in, cheers!!
I had a look for a link last night but couldnt find it - I think it may have been a Waltham link? it gave a few homemade diet recipes for various conditions but they were not intended for long term use, more of a transition. I feel certain I have posted it on here before but just cannot find it
That's alright, cheers for having a look, I'll have a look around myself for it. That sounds like it might be a good place to start if nothing else - unfortunately she's never been an inpatient with us!

Thanks for all the advice about RAW diets everyone! I've no idea how the owner wound react but it sounds like something maybe worth broaching, and something that would be a lot easier to control rather than the owner feeding whatever it is that he does. I'll speak to him and definitely have a look into all of those companies and links :D

RE: Weight Clinics on Home-Cooked Diets?

If you contact Honey's raw dog food company http://honeysrealdogfood.com/index.php they are really great and would be able to help you work out a raw weight loss plan (maybe even cooked?) They will also send you a free copy of their weight loss book.

If you call Natural Instinct or Nutriment they will send you some free samples of their frozen raw food and will be able to help you work out how much to feed the dog. You could also ask about cooking the food but I suspect that you can't because of the bone content.

RE: Weight Clinics on Home-Cooked Diets?

I had a look for a link last night but couldnt find it - I think it may have been a Waltham link? it gave a few homemade diet recipes for various conditions but they were not intended for long term use, more of a transition. There are several companies now that create frozen bags of the food with feeding guides so it is balanced. I have done that with someone who was adamant they wanted to stay with RAW feeding but was overdoing it. Then you can feed for ideal weight/suitable intrim weight and it will be balanced with veg and carbs.

I know your client is more home cooked than RAW but he may be open to the principle. Not sure on whether it would be suitable to cook the contents, if you can then they can feed cooked meat and veg and you will be happy knowing it is balanced (to an extent as cooking will effect nutritional value a little).

RE: Weight Clinics on Home-Cooked Diets?

I am on my way to work so will come back to this later- but something to consider - if you have ever had this dog as an inpatient what did it eat? that might convince the owners it will eat other things

RE: Weight Clinics on Home-Cooked Diets?

If you work out his calorie requirements could you then google the various foods he has to find the calories - there must be plenty of resources for this for humans trying to count the calories, however you also need to consider if its balanced.
