I'm starting up a new weight clinic at my new practice and I want to be able to tell the client how much their pet is overweight by (in percentages) and also how many weeks it'll take to lose the weight. I used to have the calculations but have

RE: Weight Clinic Calculations

Thank you very much for your response, it's unlike what I used before, but it's something I can use in my weight clinics anyway!

RE: Weight Clinic Calculations

Hi,

Not sure what other people use but I use the 9 point BCS to assess % overweight. so if BCS =6, then they are 10% o/wt, BCS=7 is 20%, BCS=8 is 30%, BCS=9 is 40%.

For cats: RER = (weight x 30) + 70, then MER = RER x 1-1.2 for inactive cats - so I tend to basically use MER=RER. I don't do dogs and don't have that info to hand. But to be honest I tend to use the feeding guides on the food (feeding to ideal weight) rather than getting bogged down with calories.

I personally don't use the calculation for how long it takes to lose the weight as with cats I try to emphasise that this is a very slow process and we are looking to change their eating habits permanently. I aim for 0.5-2% loss per week.
