I am looking to update our rabbit anaesthetic protocol. We currently use dexdom, ketamine and vetergesic I.m - with Sevo where necessary. I'm not happy with the whole process and wondered what other people use?
I would be ever so grateful

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol.
we dont currently place i.vs. We give dexdom, narketan, vetergesic I.m.

would you recommend having i.v access?

We have capnograph, but not Vgels... although this is something that has been discussed as a possibilty in the past.

I find that the doses that we use are no enough, and then we have to give a small amount of Sevo during the op.

I dont feel that they wake up very well.

We give metacam and metoclop too.

Thank you for your help.

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol. They suggested high dose Vetergesic, low dose acp premed. propofol induction via an ear catheter and intubation. After the vets got used to intubation it went really well... + no fussing around trying to hold all the different bits of circuit!

will try to find the information sheet- it was interesting, and really smooth and stress free for the bunns!

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol. Great recovery, most eating/active immediately After procedure. Metochlop/meloxicam given depending on case.

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol. They then get Domitor/Ketamine as a premed and then Buprecare once asleep. All get an iv catheter in their ear, and they get fluids i/v throughout procedure. We try to tube them, are successful 2/3rds of the time. The other 1/3 are on a mask, O2, Iso if necc. Syringe feed as soon as posible as soon as they are awake. Seems to work for us.

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol.
Im currently undertaking the Exotic certificate for nurses and one of our vets is undertaking the Exotic animal medicine certificate? Diploma?

Anyway, we currently use seda start, alvegesic and narketan. We use a Vgel tube and low% sevo as mentioned by the other posters here. We use a surgivet multimonitor with a capnograph - the attachment fits the Vgels well which is helpful when monitoring bunnies under GA! We also provide metacam and metoclopramide injections once asleep and cisipride and a syringe feed once awake. All bunnies get iv fluids just before they wake up with us too.

Without tempting fate, this seems to work for us quite well with generally myself and the exotic cert vet doing the surgery/GA. I think a lot of the time with bunnies confidence is key! The capnograph defiantly helps a lot in monitoring and reassurance if nothing else.

Hope this helps x

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol.
We use domitor, vetergesic and ketamine. We use v-gel tubes and maintain with low % iso. The nice thing about it is that the domitor can be reversed so the recovery time is very quick. We give metacam and metacloprimide once asleep.

RE: Rabbit anaesthetic protocol.
