I have a 2-3 year old border collie called Daisy. I have had her about 2 years and know little of her history prior to this. Over the last year she has had recurrent and increasing episodes of lameness, particularly on rising and post exercise

RE: Bilateral Femoral Head & Neck Excision vs Bilateral Hip Replacement

Hi,

I work in Orthopaedic referrals and this is something we see on a regular basis. A total Hip Replacement is obviously your gold standard surgery but is also the most expensive option! The surgeries would be done seperatly and ech would cost anything between £4000- £4500 plus VAT. Before this you would have full work up which includes a range of xrays to measure up then also post op xrays 6 weeks later, this will be an additional £350 plus VAT each time.

FHNE does also work well, this depends on the size and weight of your dog, usually £1400 plus VAT for each side, again this would be done as 2 seperate surgeries.

You should get referred for a 2nd opinion to an orthopaedic specialist and they will advise you on the best route.

Either way your dog will need to be strictly rested for 6 - 8 weeks.

Hope that helps. Good Luck with your decision.

RE: Bilateral Femoral Head & Neck Excision vs Bilateral Hip Replacement

Hi,

I know of dogs who have had bilateral hip replacements however (if I remember rightly) they are performed under 2 separate procedures as it is important they have a "good" leg to use during recovery. costing would depend on the practice you go to for the procedure, we do them at Liverpool University (but sorry I don't work on that service so don't know the costs or their protocols)

I would recommend either ringing or getting your vet to ring your local referral practice who offer hip replacements and chatting to them, they may ask to see the radiographs to give specific advice, but they will be able to give you general recovery rates and costs of both procedures, and pros and cons of both as well.
