we currently have a combination of a t piece and circle for our anaesthetics
a new vet has started and requested we get a Bain Circuit because it is better for ippv
ive tried to find out WHY it is better and the vet didn't actually even

RE: IPPV which circuit?!

Sorry, typo, should read >10kg for use of circle in crash...

Also, I hope your vet is not in the habit of requesting things they don't even understand themselves! ;-)

RE: IPPV which circuit?!

Hi.

Circle are systems are perfectly fine for IPPV under anaesthesia too. In fact they are preferable to a Bain as the gas delivered will be warmed and humidified. When used in Lo-flow re-breathing mode, they are also much more economical than a Bain as the unused oxygen is recycled rather than chucked out the scavenge.

However, there is a reason for also having a Bain available, and that is for IPPV in a resus situation for <10kg. This is because it takes a long time to compleatly rid a circle of all ISO, and you don't want to be providing any anaesthetic agent during a crash!

In summery, If I have a circle available I would always use it over a Bain or lack, even for IPPV, apart from in a crash.

RE: IPPV which circuit?!

Yup Bain or T-Piece is what I was taught. Due to a circle having soda lime in it it takes a lot of fresh gas to completely flush out the system. For short term IPPV any circuit will do but due to the way the circuits are made the Bain and T-Piece delivery oxygen directly to the patient

RE: IPPV which circuit?!

Hi

I was taught to only use a T piece or Bain for IPPV. I found this website that will explain why http://www.vetronic.co.uk/images/documents/Notes_on_Anaesthetic_breathing_systems.pdf
